Michael Jackson Beyond the Headlines
Secrets from his former bodyguard
By: Carolina Rosario
I’ve spent days unable to sleep well because of Michael Jackson.
I grew up with his music, but from a distance — like most of us. In 8th or 9th grade (don’t remember well), I danced to Thriller in a talent show, doing the best I could. I knew the hits, I could sort of do the moonwalk (very badly), and I loved his music. But I never knew him. The human being behind the legend.
That changed after I watched Michael, the film that was recently in theaters.
Opinions about the movie vary, but for me it triggered a strange sense of melancholy. Then I realized I wasn’t alone. Thousands of people around the world seemed to be feeling the exact same thing. Members of Generation Z — who weren’t even born when he died — are going to the theater two, three, even four times. They’re crying. Learning his choreography. Falling in love with his art.
But why does he still affect us so deeply?
I think it’s because Michael Jackson became a mirror reflecting some of the most painfully human experiences imaginable.
The child who was never allowed to be a child. The misunderstood soul. The abused son. The lonely man who became a joke, who was used, exposed, and scrutinized.
He was vulnerable in a way that artists at that level almost never allow themselves to be.
And hanging over all of it, is the shadow of the child abuse allegations and investigations that, in the eyes of many, never felt fully resolved.
A darker side that continues to raise questions decades later. Whether true or false, those accusations will follow his legacy forever.
Driven by my own curiosity about Michael, I invited Matt Fiddes to join Brutally Honest. Matt was Michael Jackson’s bodyguard and close friend during the last ten years of his life, and a trusted friend of the Jackson family.
Together, we explored the man behind the legend — his fears, the conspiracy theories that emerged from his extraordinary life, the allegations against him, his eccentricities, his relentless discipline, his complicated relationship with his father, his loves, and some of the secrets he carried with him.
